Risk-scoring system for predicting mucositis in patients of head and neck cancer receiving concurrent chemoradiotherapy |
A study published in the Journal of Cancer Research and Therapeutics developed a risk-scoring system to predict the likelihood and severity of mucositis in patients with head and neck cancer undergoing concurrent chemoradiotherapy. Mucositis, a painful inflammation and ulceration of the mouth lining, is one of the most common and distressing side effects of treatment. Researchers analyzed data from 218 patients and identified key risk factors including age, nutritional status, white blood cell count, disease stage, performance status and inflammatory markers.
The study found that patients with lower risk scores had only a 17% probability of developing severe mucositis, while those with higher scores faced a 76% probability. The authors concluded that this scoring tool can help clinicians identify high-risk patients early, enabling preventive interventions, improved patient counseling and better management of treatment-related complications.
